Driving in Ireland

Driving is on the left and taking your own from Britain car is easy. Bring the Motor Registration Book, Green Card or Insurance Certificate valid for Ireland (for travel into the ROI contact your insurer in good time before you travel) and full UK driving licence.

Every one speaks English although Ireland has two official languages – Gaelic (Irish) and English.

No special precautions are necessary. For travel into the Republic of Ireland, visitors from EU countries should bring an EHIC form and give this to the doctor or hospital if possible. This entitles you to free or reduced cost emergency treatment. British visitors to Northern Ireland do not require any documentation and will receive treatment as they would at home.
Important information: EHIC cover is not a substitute for travel insurance.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend that you obtain Travel Insurance before travelling. You should check for exclusions and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake, plus sufficient emergency medical cover for your stay in Ireland, including repatriation.

Customers over 75 years are eligible to rent in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland with the following specific conditions:

  • They must drive regularly.
  • They must provide a letter from their insurance company proving that they hold a current motor insurance policy and that they have been driving without having an accident for the last 5 years.
  • They must provide a letter from their doctor stating that they are in good health.
  • They may be required to undergo a driving assessment accompanied with a Budget representative.

All drivers must have a full, valid licence free of endorsements for at least two years.

The paper counterpart to the photo card licence was abolished on 8 June 2015. It is not legally valid and will not be up-dated. Pre–1998 paper licences (no photo) will not be up-dated either.

You are still required to provide proof to Budget Car Rental that you are eligible to drive a hire car and that there are no endorsements on your UK driving licence that would prevent this.

We recommend that prior to travel you follow the procedure detailed on the Gov.UK Website

This allows you to down load your driving licence details or request a code so that you can share your driving licence record with Budget Car Rental. The code is only valid for 21 days so you should generate this within that period of time prior to your departure. If you anticipate having a difficulty with this please advise us as soon as possible in order that we can make Budget Car Rental aware of the issue.

Any endorsements must be mentioned at the time of booking. Minimum rental is for one day. A day’s rental is a 24 hour period from time of collection to time of return. A part day will be charged at the full daily rate – Grace Period: 29 minutes. If the agreed pre–paid rental period is exceeded, the excess will be charged at the full daily local rate. Hirer is solely responsible for Toll Fees and any fines or similar incurred while using a hire car. Budget Car Rental will apply a fee of a minimum of €30 for processing fines and tolls. On Course Travel is not liable for any car–hire breakdowns, punctures etc. which interrupt the hirer’s holiday itinerary. No refund for early return of vehicle.

Please read the car-hire conditions on your rental agreement.
It is important to check the Rental Agreement and charges before you sign it and prior to entering your pin number into the Credit Card Terminal and leave the Car Rental Desk. Budget Car Rental will not accept liability for any charges once the Rental Agreement has been agreed and signed. Before driving the car check the condition and notify the Budget Representative of any damage that has not been highlighted on your Rental Agreement.
