Driving in Ireland

Driving is on the left and taking your own car is easy. Bring the Motor Registration Book, Green Card or Insurance Certificate valid for Ireland (for travel into the ROI contact your insurer in good time before you travel) and full UK driving licence.

Language

Every one speaks English although Ireland has two official languages - Gaelic (Irish) and English.

Health

No special precautions are necessary. For travel into the Republic of Ireland, visitors from EU countries should bring an EHIC form and give this to the doctor or hospital if possible. This entitles you to free or reduced cost emergency treatment. British visitors to Northern Ireland do not require any documentation and will receive treatment as they would at home.
Important information: EHIC cover is not a substitute for travel insurance.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions and that your policy covers you for all the activities you want to undertake. You should ensure that you have sufficient medical insurance to cover your stay in Ireland. If you need a doctor you may be asked to pay for the consultation there and then.

We are happy to recommend Gold Cover Travel Insurance as our preferred supplier of Travel Insurance. Gold Cover offers good value comprehensive Travel Insurance for Single trip and Annual Multi-Trip and many pre-existing medical conditions can be covered. For travel by sea with your own car, they can provide European Motoring Breakdown Cover with roadside assistance - to receive an instant quote visit www.oncourse.goldcover.net or call: 01892 559530 and quote On Course Travel.

Photo ID for Travel by Air

All the airlines operating between the UK & Ireland require valid photo ID for travel. Boarding will not be permitted without the correct valid Photo ID. The forms of ID accepted by the airlines we deal with vary. The most commonly accepted form is a valid passport. At the time of booking, we will outline the Photo ID your airline will accept. To book flights, we require the first name and surname for each passenger as it appears on the valid Photo ID to be used for travel. The name on the flight booking must correspond to the photo ID. No responsibility is accepted for clients unable to travel due to incorrect documentation.

Confirmed flights (restricted budget fares) are valid only for the dates and times booked. All the airlines charge for any amendments such as change of name, date and time. These charges vary and will be outlined at the time. In addition an administration fee of £50 applies for the changes to be processed.

Currency

In the Republic of Ireland the unit of currency is the Euro €. One Euro consists of 100 cents. In Northern Ireland, Sterling is the unit of currency. All major credit cards are accepted throughout the island of Ireland.
